The Voyage
Across the sculpture’s positive space, a landscape is created by a dramatic momentum that builds in the back of the artwork.
The strategic use of UV light grants the sculpture an ethereal allure, inviting viewers to ponder the depths of its artistic narrative. A testament to the artist’s heritage, Maori artist James Molnar collaborates toguether with Javier on this artwork through his Maori designs.
The initial spark of inspiration for The Voyage occurred during Javier's visit to Copenhagen. The experience initiated a flurry of sketches as he began to explore novel concepts and experiment with ideas. Among the many notions that captured his imagination, the ingenious use of light and translucent materials became an obsession.
Gradually, a vision took shape—a harmonious fusion of contemporary allure and traditional essence. The foundational concept depicted the sculpture much as it stands in its final form: a raw elongated chunk of mineral meticulously transformed into a waka on one side, while the interplay of light reveals a hidden dimension within the artwork.
