In this course we will make a full size bust, from torso up, having a model posing for us for a few days. This course will help to get closer understanding how the human face structure works.

It is a general course where we will build a head from scratch from the inner structure (bones) to the surface. We will review expressions, volume and form of muscles with a demo so you can work on your own following the steps.

There is quite a bit of theory and it will be quite complete so I recommend bringing a notebook and get ready for a complete workshop.

      THINGS WE WILL LEARN

APPROACHING THE VOLUME
Learn how to approach volumes simplifying into a basic structure to understand it.

ANATOMY
Brief approach to the understanding of how the anatomy works.

TECHNIQUES
There are many ways to approach the sculpture. Depending on the material and the size. We can do it subtracting material or adding material. Structuring using sketches or arbitrary letting you go with the form.

EXPRESSIONS
Knowing the anatomy underneath and the expression lines, you can pull muscles to get the facial expressions you want.

INFLUENCE
Learning the difference between artists works. Going through references is important because it gives you a direction.

A STEP FORWARD
The end goal helps to define the steps.

Thinking about the possible final piece. Usually the sculpture it is molded and casted in another material like bronze, plaster, resin, etc. Sometimes it works as a model we use for reference and often the sculpture will be the final piece. Depending on the  materials and Technique we choose we will get different results at the end. For example, bronze and wood are not the same as resin or silicon, so it is important to consider which medium you use for optimum results. This will help us make choices.

THE GOAL OF THIS WORKSHOP
Have a closer idea of the forms of the head and the function of it, but also the learning process you can use for teaching yourself other skills.

KEEP IN MIND
Everyone participating in this course will be at a different skill level. I will work on helping you see what you need to improve, change or learn in order to upgrade your skills. A 3 days’ workshop with me should be enough time to have an idea of my philosophy of work and certainly will make an influence in your future way of working. However, practice is the only real key that will create good habits and settle information down.

I made this video 6 years ago when I was enjoying myself in the backyard at my place back in Spain. This was sort of a quick sculpt I made and it could be an example of something anyone can do with very little resources.
